The Journey to start farming…

The Farm Notes:

The History:

The farm was once a real farm that had barns, fences, prairie, oak savannahs, and livestock. My grandfather bought the first block of land in a sheriff’s auction and continued to add more land.

Why Lavender?

The farm has always been a tree farm in some fashion whether it was an experiment with Christmas Trees, Black Walnut Trees, or White Pines. Now we are trying something that can be harvested more quickly. We’ve tried barley, discussed planting hops, and grape vines for wine but had many obstacles like wildlife, rolling hills, and inadequate soil quality. Lavender thrives on neglect!

The Process:

My husband and I had visited a lavender farm in Wisconsin and the idea of growing lavender rooted itself in my mind. With the onset of COVID-19 we were forced away from our usual activities and thought this would be the time to start this experiment.

We have currently prepped the land for the Lavender that is coming in the next couple weeks!
