Why the lavender experiment?

What do you do with a bunch of land that’s challenging to farm? How do you turn it into a real farm?

The Farm is a little different from other properties in the area in that it has a few man-made ponds (constructed back in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s). There’s a small beach too! Otherwise it has the same steep hills, hard to reach ridges and tons of trees, many of which were planted by my family. If there’s a reason to be a tree-hugger, this is it.

Why do I love the Farm so much?

  • It’s my happy place. Doesn’t everyone have a place where they can go to decompress and feel the weight of the world is lifted off their shoulders? This place is far from any city, work stress, people stress. It’s just a little sanctuary nestled in a valley up a long road.
  • It has a great story behind it. It came into my dad’s family in the late 60’s and my grandfather, dad, uncle, sister, and cousins have all contributed to it in some fashion to what it is today.

Why Lavender?

It likes dry, hilly terrain

Deer and other animals don’t like it

We’ve tried growing other things with no success, so why not?!

It CAN be grown in this part of the country.

It thrives on neglect (I’m hoping this is true!)
