From what I read, you should cover the plants after the first frost but before any chance of ice or snow can cover them. It seems like the ground might need to cool off before you cover them? I CLEARLY need to do more research on the “why” of covering them at specific times. Part of it is preventing ice from covering them.
I also read that I need to prune them back about 1/3 in the spring with some really sharp scissors or nippers. IF the plant has damage, then it needs to be pruned back to the woody stems and it should regrow.
